Introductions at the beginning of this new year: Inga Harold, Vonnie’s granddaughter, Vonnie Harold, Dot Vandaveer, Theresa Hill, Sandra Brame, Barbara Dunn, Kay Kohler, Marie Skuffeeda, Toni Bailey, Sue Rich, Sue Sargis, Linda Barnhart, Sharon Morrissey, Carol Breeden, Marguerite Bennett, Meg Lewis, Fiona Norris, and Pat Penwell.
Co-President Dot Vandaveer called the meeting to order at 1:00 pm after much conversation among members after a hot and beautiful summer.
We read the Collect at the start of the meeting.
The Meeting Record of the June meeting was read and approved.
Treasurer Vonnie Harold reported that we have $2,120.23 in the bank. The Rose Excursion earned $40.80. Garden Club Dues of $15.00 will be collected today and at the October Meeting.
Vonnie Harold reported on the excursion planned for September 19, 2015 to the Demonstration Garden at Jennings Park and to the Everett Arboretum. On October 3, 2015 there is an excursion planned to drive to the Cloud Mountain Fall Festival. A trip to Butchart Gardens would cost about $250.00 with one overnight accommodation and hiring a bus. Ten people would be needed to fill the bus or van. The Flower and Garden Show will be Feb. 17- 21st, 2016 and the approx. cost would be $130.00. Check our SJI Garden Club website for more details.
Co-President Marguerite Bennett reported on the workshops being sponsored by Brownes Home Center starting on October 17th: Winter Gardening in Containers. Marguerite also reported that a wreath making class that she is teaching is being organized. Details will be coming. Probable Date: Nov. 21, 2015.
Co-President Marguerite Bennett reported on the Flower Power fundraiser. It is available until October 15, 2015 so buy your bulbs soon. Marguerite had a brochure to look at or go to our website and check it out.
Fiona Norris reported on the San Juan County Fair and the Flower Hall. This year there were 144 adult participants and 18 youth participants: 162 participants and 332 entries.
Motion by Fiona Norris, 2nd by Kay Kohler to pay $5.00 to each of the 12 Youth Blue Ribbon winners to encourage their participation in the Flower Department at the SJ County Fair. Motion carried. The Youth Best of Show Award of $25.00 went to Meghan Strehlou. She will be attending the October Garden Club meeting. We recognized some of the Blue Ribbon winners who were able to visit our meeting: Inga Harold, Jasmyn McEwen, Oliver McEwen, Luma Smith, and Reese Tangney. Photo Op.
Motion by Sandra Brame and 2nd by Vonnie Harold to pay ½ of the cost of the arbor that was constructed for the Floral Hall since it was re-located inside the Main Building. (206.60 + tax). Motion carried.
Sandra Brame asked that the yellow table skirts be divided up and washed at home. Toni Bailey kindly volunteered to take them all home and wash them. Thank you, Toni.
Fiona Norris reported that the Master Gardener Workshop will be October 10, 2015 at the Middle School and Marianne Benetti will be the Keynote Speaker.
Fiona Norris reported that Mt. Grant will be open for vehicle travel through October on Sundays from 9 until 7 pm. Go and check out the spectacular view. It is open for foot travel every day.
Co- President Marguerite Bennett brought hardy white flowering cyclamen for us to see and she talked about their beauty, habits, and their requirement for good drainage.
Kay Kohler brought several large basil plants to share.
