Speaker: Farhad Ghatan “Alternative Methods of treating pests and common garden issues/Some things to know about storm water.
Farhad gave some storm water statistics about runoff and storm water in the Puget Sound region. He mentioned the two grants that the Town of Friday Harbor has obtained to design and build a bio filter on the shoreline to pre treat our storm water before it enters the saltwater. Friday Harbor is the first town in Washington State to voluntarily treat its storm water.
Farhad mentioned several effective methods of treating common problems.
*Baking Soda Use to get rid of moss on roofs, decks, and walkways
*Borax Mix with sugar and it kills almost every insect known to man Use it as a paste or use 6 parts sugar to 1 part borate
*Diatomaceous Earth Use it to kill aphids and soft bodied insects It can be purchased at Home Depot or swimming pool supply stores. Be very careful to keep it away from your eyes, nose, mouth and skin.
*Sluggo can be used on slugs. It is iron sulfate.
*Vinegar is highly acidic and it can be used on cracks and driveways to keep weeds down.
*A torch weedeater is an efficient tool against weeds.
Other tips from Farhad: Don’t walk on your soil. Buy a hula hoe. It is a great garden tool.
Farhad was lively, positive, and fun to listen to.
