Hostesses: Janet Dann and Rachelle Voth
Attendance: 14, plus program guests Bonnie Turman and Drew
Guests: Nancy Lindenberg, Nancy Earp, Heather Olson and Jenny Breedlove.
Theme: Valentines Day with red tulips, primroses and red candles, plus Marguerite’s red amaryllis plant in full bloom. The theme was further evident in the delicious red velvet cake with white frosting.
The meeting was called to order by Co-President Marguerite Bennett at 1:07 p.m.
The meeting started off with the program by Bonnie Turman of “Creative Passions”. She showed us an assortment of items that she carries in her store. She showed us several methods to make fabric flowers, and methods to preserve flowers. She had a pretty wreath made by pulling pieces of aqua and turquoise tulle through a wire wreath frame. She has beading, quilting, party, scrapbook and card making supplies. She also does birthday parties in her shop. Her prices are competitive, and she is happy to place special orders.
The meetings from the December 2014 meeting, by Pat Penwell, were approved as read by Kathy Wieck.
Treasurer Vonnie Harold reported that the balance of the bank account at Heritage Bank is $2,254.79.
Dot Vandaveer told us about an upcoming field trip, on March 28, 2015, to Christiansen’s Gardens and High Tea at La Conner Flats. The details were handed out to all present, and also via email to all members. There will be space for 15 people, and Marguerite will be the driver of the van.
Janet Dann brought books about gardening and wildlife that were from her mother, Barbara Dann’s collection. They were happily taken by those in attendance.
She also talked about the plants in the Mullis Center that are often lacking in care. Rachelle made a motion and Marie seconded it that the SJICG would adopt the plants and water them once a month.
Marguerite talked to us about 2015 changes at the County Fair this year. The Fair Board has other plans for the outside area where the Garden Club and Horticultural Society have had their exhibits. Both groups will be moved into the Main Building. Dot and Marguerite will attend the Fair Board meeting at 9:00 a.m. on Feb. 9, 2015.
Marguerite also told us that the San Juan Island Garden Tour is June 13, 2015. It is sponsored by the SJI Horticultural Society, with assistance from the SJIGC. Docents are needed for the various gardens.
Marguerite passed out color brochures for the FLOWER POWER fundraiser. These are bulbs that get planted in the spring. Bulbs can be ordered on line or by mail. The garden club receives 50% off the proceeds. The campaign will end on May 31st.
Theresa Hill talked about the flower potting workshop scheduled for May 16, 2015. It is to be held in cooperation with Island Rec. Theresa said she wanted the fee to be $55 per person, and Island Rec is advertising it at $65 per person. She doesn’t think that very many people have signed up. There is a possibility that Theresa will go forward with the plan if Island Rec backs out.
Marguerite asked if anyone was going to the Seattle Garden Show, starting on February 11, 2015. She plans on attending for 2 or 3 days.
Hostesses for the March meeting will be Sandra Brame and Kathy Wieck.
The “Collect” was read and the meeting was adjourned at 2:25 p.m.
