Co-President Marguerite Bennett called the meeting to order at 1:25 pm. Again, we all enjoyed visiting with each other and catching up on the news.
The Minutes from the last meeting were approved as corrected.
Treasurer Vonnie Harold reported that the balance of the account is $2,490.25.
President Marguerite Bennett gave out copies of the Membership Directory/ 2014 Program Guide.
The speaker was Kris Bayas, WSU Master Gardener Program Coordinator. Kris told us about the activities of the Master Gardeners and the kinds of questions that are asked at the MG Clinic. She handed out a pie graph of types of questions and a list of useful websites to find answers to local gardening questions. Kris also mentioned that 75% of plant problems are environmental or cultural (user error) problems. The upcoming Master Gardeners training program will be on Tuesdays in February and March, 2015 in Friday Harbor at the Grange Hall. The speakers come from around the state and they are excellent. A Master Gardener agrees to give 50 hours of service in one year to the community after the training program has been completed. The cost is $170.00. $70.00 to register and do the on-line coursework, and $100.00 to help pay for the additional classroom costs. It sounds like an interesting and worthwhile program.
Vonnie Harold reported on the excursion to Bellevue Botanical Gardens, Skagit Gardens, and Molbaks on Dec. 6-7, 2014. To break even, we need 15 people to sign up. Look for the excursion flyer or an e-mail.
President Marguerite Bennett reported on the Blair Ave. construction project. She spoke with Duncan Wilson, the Town Administrator, and trees will be planted along the street with some artistic grates. Hanging baskets might also be attractive additions to the street scene.
Motion by Marie Skuffeeda and 2nd by Janet Dann to proceed with obtaining an Employers Information Number (EIN) for San Juan Island Garden Club. This number is needed to open a banking account. Motion carried.
Motion by Marguerite Bennett and 2nd by Meg Lewis to limit the amount to $150.00 that the Treasurer may sign a check for with one signature. Over that amount, two signatures will be necessary. At this time, the second signature will be Dot Vandaveer. Motion carried.
Vonnie Harold reported on obtaining non profit status for the Garden Club and after discussion, since we are a small club doing very little business, it seemed appropriate to continue without the formal non profit status.
Janet Dann brought some dried clover blossoms that she found in her Mother’s things and Janet also brought a rooted stem from one of Joyce Harrell’s coral blossom Christmas cactus to share.
Sandra Brame thanked Vonnie Harold for accepting the Treasurer’s position. Sandra introduced her guest, BJ “Betty” Craddock. Sandra also asked members to take some of the yellow table skirts home to launder so that they will be ready and clean for next year’s SJ County Fair.
The meeting adjourned at 2:28 pm.
